A full breakdown of surfaces, sightlines, covered courts, and the street you must never turn down

There’s a fenced park with paved stroller paths and good shade coverage — you just have to know how to get to the parking lot.
University Park is a moderately sized, easily supervised playground with a decent number of amenities. It has ball fields, covered courts, and tennis courts, but comes with a confusing bathroom situation, restricted pool hours, and a genuinely tricky entrance.
Park Features & Amenities
The short version: the park does well on stroller access, sports amenities, and shade. Upkeep is medium for an outdoor park — no trash, but some visible wear on the playground equipment.
Splash pad? No. Pool? Yes.
Surface & Equipment — 2/3
The paved paths running through the park make it easy to navigate with a stroller, and there’s enough going on here to make up for some minor wear on the playground.
- Full ball fields for practice and play
- Covered courts and open-air tennis courts
- Paved paths throughout — stroller-friendly
- The playground mulch is worn thin in high-traffic spots, exposing the black weed matting underneath, especially near the slides
- A few empty metal brackets are visible on the equipment where pieces used to attach
Overall it holds up fine. The missing equipment attachments aren’t safety hazards, just signs of age. The grounds themselves are clean and trash-free.
Shade & Heat — 3/3
This one does better than most on afternoon sun.
- Four sun shades built directly over the playground structures
- 15+ mature oak trees scattered across the grounds providing natural canopy
Containment & Sightlines — 3/3
The layout makes it easy to keep an eye on your kids. Sightlines inside the playground are clear in every direction, and the whole area is fenced in.
There’s a gap in the fence line near the pool that I didn’t get close enough to check — it may just be an angled opening rather than a missing section. Worth a glance if your kid tends to run.
The Pool & Restrooms — 1/3
There’s an actual neighborhood pool here, but access is limited. Open Swim runs Monday through Saturday, 1:00–6:00 PM, for $1 admission — bring cash, as these pools typically don’t take cards. Swim lessons are Monday through Friday at 9, 10, and 11 AM. If lessons are running, open swim doesn’t happen — no exceptions.
Restrooms are harder to pin down. There’s no signage indicating where a bathroom is. They may be inside the pool facility, but if the gates are locked, you’re out of luck.
Parking & The Dead-End Ditch — 2/3
Once you’re on the right street, parking is easy — plenty of spaces right up front. Getting there is the tricky part. Two streets sit right next to each other leading toward the park, separated by a ditch. Turn down the street on the right and you’ll dead-end, staring at the park from across the ditch. Take the street on the left to actually reach the lot.

Open Green Space & Seating
There’s a good amount of seating — benches along the paths, near the playground, and by the courts — plus a couple of covered picnic tables for shade at lunch. Given the park’s compact size, you can sit in most spots and still keep an eye on your kids.
The Basics
- Cost: Free admission to the park; $1 for pool access
- Location: 1001 Central Pkwy, Lake Charles, LA 70605
- Navigation Warning: Take the left street to enter; the right street is a dead end blocked by a ditch.
The Strategist’s Summary
University Park is a workable stroller park. Good paths, solid shade, sports facilities, and plenty of seating make it an easy place to hang out. Just check the pool schedule ahead of time and have a bathroom backup plan.
The cheat sheet:
- Stroller-friendly with paved paths throughout
- Ball fields, covered courts, and tennis courts on site
- 15+ mature oak trees plus four built-in sun shades over the playground
- Clear sightlines in every direction, fully fenced — but check the possible fence gap near the pool
- Good amount of seating, plus 1-2 covered picnic tables
- Medium upkeep for an outdoor park — no trash, but thin mulch and a few missing equipment brackets
- Plenty of parking once you’re on the right street — take the left street; the right street dead-ends at a ditch
- No visible bathrooms or signage anywhere on the playground
- Pool Open Swim is Mon–Sat, 1–6 PM ($1, bring cash); morning lessons close the pool to everyone else
