About Me

Welcome. I’m so glad you’re here.

You know the feeling — it’s Saturday morning, the kids are already asking what we’re doing today, and you’re standing in the kitchen scrolling through three different Facebook groups trying to figure out if that splash pad is even open. You just want one smooth afternoon. You’re not asking for much.

I know that feeling because I’m in it too, most weekends, with a four-year-old and a six-year-old.

I’m Jessica Rabel.

I’ve been full-time momming — and part-time substitute teaching — since I left case management work back in 2019. Before that, I spent years as a special education teacher and a mental health case manager, working directly with kids and families on the kind of things that don’t show up in a “top 10 family-friendly spots” listicle: what actually helps a kid regulate when they’re overstimulated, what a “family-friendly” claim really means once you’re standing there with two toddlers, what to check before you ever load the car.

I’ve also been writing for six years — I’ve kept a blog on Medium the whole time, long before this site existed. And for the last two years, I’ve been doing professional art on the side, which is its own kind of “figure out what actually works and do it again.” Between the teaching background, the writing, and the art, paying close attention and writing things down clearly is just how I operate. This site is that habit pointed at the thing I actually need most: a smooth Saturday with my own kids.

So I started keeping field notes. Which parks have a fence. Which drive-thru is actually fast. Where to go when it’s pouring rain and everyone’s stir-crazy. I check the shade. I check the bathroom situation. I check the boring, practical stuff nobody posts about until you’re standing there without it.

This isn’t a new hobby. It’s six years of writing, put to work on the thing that actually matters right now.

When you pull up to a park and your kids run off to play while you get five minutes to sit on a shaded bench — that’s the whole point. You don’t need more research. You need one place that’s already done it.
