Find Your Next Afternoon Adventure by City

Icon Legend for who runs the park: 🏙️ = City | 🌲 = Parish (Calcasieu Parish Police Jury) | ⚜️ = State (Louisiana State Parks) | 🛝 Playground | 💦 = Splash Pad | 🏊 = Pool
I have written only a few park reviews so far with information about amenities, what kind of shade they have, toddler friendly, etc. I will link them here as I write them.
Parks in Lake Charles
- Millennium Park 🏙️ 🛝 💦 : A sprawling downtown favorite located right by the lakefront. Features a fully fenced playground for excellent containment and a dedicated splash park for hot afternoons.
- Tuten Park 🏙️ 🛝 : Provides a shaded, natural woodland setting that feels entirely removed from the city bustle. Offers peaceful walking paths, ample wildlife viewing, and a well-maintained playground surrounded by mature trees.
- Drew Park 🏙️ 🛝 : An active recreational hub equipped with an indoor community facility. Features classic playgrounds, walking trails, open picnic spots, and access to indoor table games.
- Bark Du Lac Dog Park 🏙️: A dedicated, secure space right in the downtown district for four-legged family members to run off energy. Fully enclosed open play area with park benches. Not a playground! It is just a grassy area to let your dogs run. That’s it.
- Huber Park 🏙️ 🛝 : Serves the local community with broad open athletic spaces. Features a standard playground, ball fields, uncovered bleachers, and restrooms. It is pretty run down, not kept up, has some broken equipment, graffiti and the bathrooms look pretty gross…and they’re locked.
- Bord Du Lac Park 🏙️ : Rests directly along the water, offering a highly scenic backdrop for a quick outing. Great for open-air strolling and utilized as a pass-through space during downtown festivals. Not a playground! It is a great place to walk with kids though because it has a railing along the entire way, lots of fountains and statues and ducks to feed.
- Prien Lake Park 🌲 🛝 💦 : A massive 29-acre lakeside destination that stands out as a premier parish facility. Features a splash pad, boardwalk running along the lake, outdoor ampitheatre, outdoor fitness area, fountains, expansive play areas, landscaped picnic tables, and a boat launch.
- Isreal LeFleur Park 🌲: This is the description AI gives: A fantastic waterfront access point perfect for beach days or launching small watercraft. Offers a public beach area, an open-air pavilion, and a dedicated boat and kayak launch. Not a playground! It is literally an empty area underneath the bridge. There is nothing there. It is a parking lot.
- White Oak Park 🌲 🛝 : I have not been here so I don’t know what this is. AI says “Provides a quieter environment positioned slightly away from the densest parts of the city center. Ideal for relaxed, low-traffic outdoor recreation with sprawling natural spaces.” That usually means “it is a lawn with nothing else there”, but it says it has a playground, so it may be more.
- University Park 🏙️ 🛝 🏊: Fully fenced playground shaded by 15+ mature oaks and sun sails, with paved stroller-friendly paths. Features a public swimming pool (1001 Central Pkwy), covered basketball courts, and tennis courts.
- Lock Park 🏙️ 🛝: A heavily shaded, historic park near downtown featuring a large pavilion, walking paths, and distinct playground equipment.

- Mary K. Nelson Park 🏙️ 🛝: A smaller neighborhood pocket park offering basic play structures and a covered picnic area.
Parks in Sulphur
- Frasch Park 🏙️ 🛝 🏊 : A flagship facility managed by Sulphur Parks & Recreation (SPAR), offering massive sports and recreation capacity. Home to an 18-hole golf course, multiple ball fields, and walking paths. SPAR Waterpark (located next to Frasch) 💦 🏊 has a lazy river, big slides, a big multilevel kids water playground and a separate small kids water playground with a 2 foot zero entry pool and splash pad. It’s a nice facility but dated. Snack bar has lunch available.
- Center Circle Park 🏙️ 🛝 🏊 💦: A community hub featuring an inclusive playground, a dedicated splash pad, and a public swimming pool. It includes tennis courts, a covered basketball pavilion, and multiple covered picnic areas.

- The Grove at Heritage Square 🏙️: Acts as a highly accessible central gathering place right in the heart of Sulphur. Provides a beautiful, manicured space for community events and features excellent paved walkways. Not a playground, but kids love to run around here and walk the paths.
- Maplewood Commons 🏙️ 🛝 💦 : A charming neighborhood park nestled squarely in the Maplewood residential area. An excellent, low-key spot for a shaded afternoon picnic.
- Holbrook Park 🌲: A Calcasieu Parish facility that leans heavily into its quiet, natural surroundings. Features a scenic pavilion structure, lots of open grass, and a quiet alternative to busy sports complexes. Aka there is no playground. Again.
- Intracoastal Park 🌲: Sits right along the waterway, providing unobstructed views of the Intracoastal Waterway. Features integrated picnic spots and easy fishing access. The kids really like to have picnics here, go crabbing and watch the pelicans. No playground. The gift shop is also closed indefinitely.

- Carlyss Park 🏙️ 🛝: A local community park that recently added a 10-hole disc golf course. The facility also provides access to recreational fields and an indoor rec room.
- McMurry Park 🏙️ 🛝: Operates as a heavily utilized sports complex famous for hosting large-scale tournaments. The grounds include dedicated children’s play areas away from the main fields.

Parks in Westlake
- Pinederosa Park 🏙️ 🛝 💦 🏊 : The standout community hub for the city, heavily utilized for local gatherings. Widely known for hosting parties and large community picnics with extensive shaded spaces. The playground serves as the primary play structure zone within the larger Pinederosa footprint. Highly rated for its expansive, kid-friendly layout surrounded by large pine trees. Lazy Gator water park is next to the ball fields with a lazy river, big slides, snack/lunch bar, dive pools and another splash pad (ponderosa has two splash pads, one by the playground and one inside lazy Gator). Freeedom Hall operates as an associated multi-use facility right alongside Pinederosa Park. Used frequently for indoor community events and scheduled rentals.
- The Recreation District 1 Multi-Purpose Complex 🏙️ 🛝 : An active, heavily outfitted sports and recreation center. Equipped with both indoor gym facilities and outdoor fields for youth athletics. (Huge playground that’s like 3 stories high, almost brand new, tons of swings).
- Riverside Park 🌲 : A parish-run site providing a serene escape right along the water. Great for quiet walks and getting away from heavier municipal traffic. Not a playground. Do not confuse this with River bluff park in Moss bluff.
Parks in Moss Bluff
- Moss Bluff Recreation 🏙️ 🛝 🏊 : The overarching Ward 1 complex that anchors all major outdoor play in the community. The central hub for local youth leagues, featuring updated playgrounds and well-maintained sports fields.
- Don Manuel Memorial Sports Complex 🏙️: Operates as the specific athletic facility identity within the broader Ward 1 recreation footprint. Features highly-rated sports infrastructure and wide-open spaces. Not a playground.
